A growing financial-advising company with deep York roots plans to add 22 new jobs to its local branch before 2013.

Interviews will start immediately for the 18 financial-adviser and four support-staff positions that will join Northwestern Mutual at its new spot on Continental Square in York City.

The company signed a six-year lease in June to occupy the former Futer Bros. Jewelers building at 1-3 S. George St.

About two dozen Northwestern Mutual employees gathered there early Monday to hear Tim Mulroy, managing director of the company's York, Adams and Franklin county branches, talk about the upcoming changes.

Standing on an ornamental tree planter and reading from the smartphone he held, Mulroy said he wants to trigger "a national financial-security revolution."

Americans are increasingly without life insurance and retirement plans, he said. Fewer people can pay to send their kids to college or build a savings account.

"This country needs help," said Mulroy, a 1999 Red Lion High School graduate.

Adding jobs will allow the company to help more York County residents plan for the future, he said.

By the end of 2013, Mulroy said, he wants to have added 40 new jobs in York. That doesn't include 20 interns, most of whom will come from York College and Penn State York.

As for the financial adviser positions, anyone is welcome to apply, said Brandy Shope, the company's executive director of selection in York. She wants to interview 200 people during the next few months.

"We're looking for charismatic, impactful people," she said.
