The York City Council on Tuesday evening approved a land development plan submitted by a local metal maker that will add jobs and expand its facilities.

Wellsville-based Pennex Aluminum intends to double its size to span 40,000 square feet in York City Business and Industrial Park, where the company extricates aluminum into metal shapes.

The new construction is needed to accommodate a contract that will require the company to have additional space, according to Steve Kuhl, fabrication business unit manager.

He wouldn't name the customer, but Kuhl said the contract will create a 30 percent increase in business and has already generated five, full-time jobs this year.

Pennex Aluminum has had a facility in York for 10 years, and city government worked closely with the company to ensure the growth, said Kevin Schreiber, economic and community development director.

"We moved heaven and earth to expedite this," he said. "It's a great example of how our private sector and community can work together."
