It's a salon in the front and a shop in the back.
And co-owner Kostas Sgagias said it defines the modern convenience store.
At La Bodega & King's Salon, which opened Friday at 629 W. Market St., customers can find a full range of salon services, shop for T-shirts and accessories, pay bills, transfer money and buy snacks.
"It's a one-stop shop," said Sgagias, who also owns Reliance Café in West York. "This is the new convenience store."
Sgagias and co-owner Adolfo Madrigal, who also owns Auto Kings Auto Repair in York, said the salon-shop combination isn't unlike what customers find at Walmart.
"At Walmart, people can get take-out, get their hair done, get all the retail and can send money," Sgagias said. "We're a microcosm of that."
Reaching out: And La Bodega & King's Salon is reaching out to York's Spanish-speaking community with its hours and employees, the owners said.
"There aren't really any business in the city that cater to the Spanish community, and it's a missed opportunity because it's a major demographic here," Sgagias said.
The new business is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and, during all of its hours, half of its employees on duty will be able to speak fluent Spanish, the owners said.
"A lot of the people here, who speak Spanish, don't go to salons because of the communication barrier," Madrigal said.
The three stylists and three counter workers at La Bodega & King's Salon will be able to effectively communicate with those customers, the owners said.
Location: They were also keeping those customers in mind when choosing a location for their new business, they said.
While there are a lot of businesses on Queen and George streets in the city, the outskirts of West Market Street don't have as many offerings, they said.
"It's nice that we're not surrounded by competition, but we're also giving people an easy place to walk to," he said.
And unlike a lot of suburban salons and downtown barbers, La Bodega & King's Salon is open every day.
"If you don't have a car and can't get to the malls, there's really nowhere to get your hair done downtown on a Sunday," Sgagias said. "We're here for those customers."
As part of its grand opening and back-to-school event, the salon is offering $6 haircuts to students in kindergarten through 12th grade on Friday and Saturday.
