Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets are alerting customers to a dog food recall.

The grocery chains have removed a flavor of Pedigree canned dog food from its shelves, after Mars Petcare US issued a recall due to a potential choking risk.

Included in the recall is Pedigree's Weight Management Meat Ground Beef & Liver Dinner, sold in 13.2-ounce cans with a best-before date between Feb. 24, 2014 and March 23, 2014.

The product may contain small pieces of blue plastic, which entered the dog food during the production process, according to a news release.

A small number of consumers found plastic pieces, but no injuries or subsequent illnesses have been reported, according to the news release.

Customers who have purchased the product should discard any unused portions or bring their purchase receipt to Giant or Martin locations for a full refund, said Chris Brand, a spokesman for the grocery chain.

For additional information on the recall, call Mars Petcare US at 877-720-3335 or visit www.pedigree.com/update.
