York Rescue Mission leaders are hoping an event this weekend will help the organization get through a lean time of year.
The Markets at Shrewsbury is partnering with the York City nonprofit for its annual Southern York County Barbecue Cook-Off.
The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 12025 Susquehanna Trail in Glen Rock.
More than 40 competitors are expected to compete and smoke pork roasts that will be donated to the York Rescue Mission.
Bins for food donations will also be set up at the cook-off.
"This is the time of year when we're getting down to empty shelves, so this will really help," said Dianne Smeigh, spokeswoman for the nonprofit.
The mission: York Rescue Mission is a religious organization that provides food, clothing, shelter and spiritual guidance in its programs for women, children and men.
The nonprofit served more than 162,000 meals last year and will start its biggest fundraiser next month.
From Sunday, Oct. 19, to Saturday, Dec. 20, York Rescue Mission will hold its annual food drive.
During those two months, the organization will collect various food items including pasta, stuffing, rice, low-sugar cereals, pancake mixes, gelatin, pudding, sweet potatoes, milk, powdered milk, condiments, spices, canned goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, paper goods and more.
Food can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily at the York Rescue Mission, 367 W. Market St.
