The Spring Grove Area School District will induct its first class into a new athletic hall of fame this year.
The new awards and recognition come after a committee submitted a proposal for the new group. That proposal was approved by the school board earlier this month.
"This has been something that we've talked about on and off for a couple of years," said Lisa Smith, spokeswoman for the district.
The committee, driven largely by athletic director Scott Govern, has set up the parameters for the hall of fame, which will be able to recognize athletes, coaches and other people vital to Spring Grove athletics over the years, Smith said.
Nominees: Govern said Spring Grove's past offers an abundance of people worthy of being recognized in a hall of fame.
"Spring Grove has such a rich history," he said. "It's an honor to recognize these people."
Since application forms became available last week, Govern said he's already received eight forms, and is expecting 10 to 20 more before the end of this week, he said.
For this year, Govern said the committee will accept nominees on behalf of people involved with Spring Grove athletics before 2004. The committee that worked to establish the hall of fame, made up of school board, booster club and community members, will vote on the inductees, Govern said.
The nominating and voting process might go until December, with a banquet to induct the first class in the spring, he said.
New goal: Govern said the hall of fame will give current students "something to strive for."
Athletics isn't about a future hall of fame induction, Govern added, but most hall of fame members are people who are passionate about their sports.
"They're the ones who seem to get there," he said.
So far, the nomination forms have included coaches and athletes from the 1950s until the 1980s, Govern said.
Nominations are also available for key fans of a certain sport, Smith said, such as a booster club member who went above the normal duties or was viewed as the "mother" or "father" of a team.
Criteria for nominations and the forms can be found on Spring Grove's athletics page.
