York County Prison maintenance workers have a contract for the first time in almost two years.
County commissioners Wednesday approved the collective bargaining contract agreement between the county and Teamsters Local Union 776 in Harrisburg for the 11 employees, said Kristy Bixler, executive director of human resources for the county.
The contract is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2013, and runs through Dec. 31, 2016.
Contract negotiations started in 2012, and the workers' old contract expired at the end of that year, Bixler said. In that time, corrections officers at the prison went to arbitration for their contract, so others were put on hold, she said.
"It was just a matter of waiting to see what came out of others and seeing what we could do," Bixler said.
Through the contract, hourly rates are being adjusted based on years of service for 2013 and 2014, and any increases will be paid retroactively, she said. Before, wages were "kind of all over the board," Bixler said.
For 2015 and 2016, workers will see wage increases of 2.25 percent, she said.
The maintenance workers are responsible for the entire prison facility — including plumbing, heating and air conditioning — as well as the grounds outside, Bixler said.
"They do a lot of work," she said.
