State police say a Windsor Township man had four children in his SUV when he led a trooper on a short chase in Chanceford Township.

After Christopher Michael Forbes Sr., 24, pulled over, he told the arresting trooper that "when he sees a cop, he always runs" and that he fled because he did not "want to go to jail," according to his charging documents.

But jail is exactly where Forbes found himself for about three days until he was released from York County Prison on $5,000 bail Thursday, according to court records.

Forbes is charged with four counts each of child endangerment and reckless endangerment, single counts each of fleeing and eluding and possession of drug paraphernalia and was cited with numerous vehicle violations, according to court records.

The chase: According to Forbes' charging documents, Trooper Michael Harris used a radar gun to clock the Ford Explorer, later determined to be driven by Forbes, traveling 53 mph in a 45 mph zone southbound on Delta Road at 10:12 a.m. on June 23.

Harris also ran the license plate of the SUV through a database, finding Forbes' license is suspended because of a previous DUI, documents state.

The trooper began to follow Forbes, of 1650 Craley Road, who sped up to a high rate of speed and turned onto Burns Road, a gravel road. As he tried to catch up to the SUV, Harris turned on his cruiser's emergency lights and siren but Forbes continued on, driving from one side of the road to the other and, at times, appearing to lose control of the SUV, almost driving off the road, documents state.

After about two miles, Forbes pulled over.

Children found: When speaking with the trooper, Forbes acknowledged that his license is suspended and further told the trooper that he had a glass pipe, used to smoke marijuana, under the front passenger seat of the SUV, documents state.

The trooper also found four children — ages 6, 13, 14 and 16 — inside the SUV, documents state.

The 6-year-old was not in a required booster seat, documents state.

A phone number for Forbes could not be located Sunday. It is not known if he has retained an attorney.
