A mix of retailers and restaurants will open in Shrewsbury this fall as a new shopping plaza comes to fruition.

Messina Highlands is expected to open by the end of October along Forrest Avenue at a site across from Shrewsbury Commons. It will include a one-story building, two-story building and pad site, according to Kevin Potter, sales and leasing specialist with Rhino Realty Group Inc.

People's Bank will open at the pad site. AT&T, Chipotle, Five Guys, Glamour Nails, Great Clips, Mattress Warehouse and Panera Bread will open in the buildings.

Space is still available in the buildings, which could be used for retail, restaurants, and professional and medical offices.

The new shopping center is owned by Joe Messina, who also owns Glen Rock Pizzeria and Messina Plaza in Glen Rock and Messina Plaza in Stewartstown.

The 36,000-square-foot retail center in Shrewsbury is his largest project to date.

Messina forwarded all questions about the new development to Potter.

The owner chose to build Messina Highlands because of the location, Potter said.

"Being adjacent to Walmart and the proximity to Interstate 83 made it very attractive," he said.

Messina Highlands may also attract customers in southern York County who might have previously traveled to Springettsbury Township, West Manchester Township or parts of Maryland to go to Panera Bread, Potter said.

It will be Panera Bread's fourth location in York County. In addition to the restaurants in Springettsbury and West Manchester townships, there's also a location in Hanover.

Chipotle has York County locations in Springettsbury and York townships, and Five Guys has two locations in Springettsbury Township, one in York City and one in Hanover.
