A black bear was spotted twice Monday in Fairview Township, according to police.

About 1 p.m., someone reported seeing a bear along Old Forge Road, township police said, and later another person reported seeing a bear on Lewisberry Road.

Officers responded but were unable to find the bear.

Police said at this time of year, young black bears leave their mothers and seek new territory.

People should secure their trash and bird feeders if bears are in the area, police said. Because of the heat, bears also could be attracted to swimming pools, ponds and streams.

Black bears usually run when confronted, police said.

Police ask if residents to stay inside if they see a bear, and to call the Pennsylvania Game Commission or 911.
