With summer just around the corner, so are the yearly carnivals put on by some York County fire departments.
The first of a series of the game and ride filled festivals, which wrap up with the Dover Fireman's Carnival around the Labor Day holiday, begins later this month in Shrewsbury.
The Shrewsbury Fire Co. will host its six-day carnival, the 81st annual, starting Monday, June 23.
Fire officials say this year's carnival will be expanded, including the addition of a second tribute night, this one to honor first responders.
For the second year in a row, veterans will be honored during a night of patriotic songs, said Matt Mitzel, fire company spokesman and carnival organizer. The tribute to veterans will be held Tuesday, June 24.
A few nights later, on Friday, June 27, firefighters, medics and police officers will be honored in similar fashion called "Hometown Heroes Night."
"We're trying to make things bigger and better," Mitzel said. "We're changing it up this year."
New attractions: Also this year, the fire company will offer up new attractions in an effort to draw in more people.
One of the new attractions is a food court, which is expected to boast numerous area food vendors, Mitzel said.
But one of the keys to a successful event, another fire official said, is making sure there's good music.
"Entertainment brings people in," said Nick Caruccio, president of the fire company.
Bands will grace the stage each night of the carnival, and the last night will feature a fireworks display.
