The Dover Area School Board is planning to decide which of the two superintendent candidates will be the district's next leader.
The board plans to interview the candidates this week, said Terry Emig, the board's president. The finalists are Keith Yarger, superintendent of Southern Tioga School District in Blossburg, Tioga County; and Kenneth Cherry, assistant superintendent with the School District of Philadelphia.
They were among 21 applicants for the superintendent's position in Dover Area School District, Emig said. The board started its superintendent search about two months ago, he said.
Yarger and Cherry have already met with a focus group of Dover community members, including parents and taxpayers, Emig said.
The search process is being led by the Pennsylvania School Board Association, which ran the focus group meeting, conducted applicants' reference checks and informed the Dover board on effective ways to interview applicants and the types of questions board members can ask, Emig said.
The board's interviews will not be open to the public, he said. Vote: A public vote will be held on the matter after the interview process is complete, though a timeline for that action has not been established, Emig said.
The board's goal is to have a superintendent in place prior to the start of the 2014-2015 school year, Emig said.
The new superintendent would replace Robert Krantz, who retired from the position in January. The board selected assistant superintendent Jason Conway — who was hired April 2013 — to be the acting superintendent.
Need leaders: On May 19, Conway submitted his notice of resignation, effective June 30. The board voted to return him to his assistant superintendent position for the remainder of his time with the district.
Conway has been named the new superintendent of Lake Forest School District in Felton, Del.
The board will find a new assistant superintendent after getting a new district leader, Emig said.
Dover's current acting superintendent, as of May 24, is Joel Riedel, who also has served as the district's director of instruction and pupil personnel services.
