A police officer in Springettsbury Township has been promoted, his second advancement in as many years.

Former Cpl. Richard M. Thompson will officially be promoted to the rank of sergeant during a ceremony on Friday, according to a news release from the police department.

Thompson, an eight-year veteran with the department, was previously promoted to corporal in 2012, serving as a patrol supervisor.

Before coming to Springettsbury Township, he spent about six years with the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland.

Thompson graduated from York Catholic High School in 1996 and earned a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from York College in 2000.
