For the 13th year, the popular Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is back — just in time for fresh summer produce.

The program, offered by the York County Area Agency on Aging and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, gives $20 vouchers to eligible seniors to buy fruits and vegetables grown in the state.

So far, the agency has given away vouchers at a couple of sites and has seen an increase from last year's numbers, said spokeswoman Jenny Nace.

"It does seem to remain a popular event," she said.

The program is a good opportunity for those on a limited income to have some extra spending money to spend at local farm markets for wholesome fruits and veggies, Nace said.

Last year, about 3,100 York County residents received vouchers, and about 86 percent redeemed them, she said.

But the agency would still like to reach more eligible people for the program, Nace said.

Eligibility: To be eligible, a resident must be 60 years of age or older and have a 2014 total gross annual household income at or below $21,590 for a single person, or $29,101 for a couple. They must show proof of age and York County residency when they pick up their vouchers.

Seniors can redeem their vouchers between June 1 and Nov. 30 from participating farm markets.

If someone is unable to come pick up a voucher, he or she may send a proxy who can complete a proxy form at most senior centers or the Forms & Documents page of www.ycaaa.org.

Seniors must obtain their vouchers in York County but may use them in other counties, Nace said. They can receive the vouchers only once per calendar year.

Residents of nursing homes or any residential setting that offers meals are not eligible for the program.
