Beaver Street store owners are thanking moms this week.

They're noticing a welcome sales boost at their York City stores as shoppers look for Mother's Day gifts.

It's also the better weather that makes it much more appealing to hit the stores than the snow and ice that covered the ground for Valentine's Day.

"The sun's out, and people are happy and smiling as they shop for new things for spring," said Melissa Grove, owner of Sweet Melissa's Dream, 38 N. Beaver St.

Several customers visited her store Wednesday as she showed off the best gifts for moms.

"Scarves are always a great gift. It's still a little chilly and they're fashionable. Everyone likes them," she said. A shirt, jacket or cardigan also make "good, simple gifts," Grove said.

Kimman's, at 57 N. Beaver St., is also selling a lot of jewelry for Mother's Day.

"We've been very busy since First Friday," said Joan Bainbridge, sales associate.

Through Mother's Day, the store is hosting a trunk show for Lotus, a jewelry company in Timonium, Md. All Lotus merchandise is 20 percent off.

Several other jewelry designers are also featured in the store.

Other top Mother's Day gifts include Vera Bradley bags, personalized gifts and Nora Fleming pottery, she said.

There's also one gift that will always be a great purchase for mom, said Hilary Arthur, owner of Arthur & Daughters, 49 N. Beaver St.

"The No. 1 gift is a handbag," she said.

Arthur & Daughters is selling Louis Vuitton bags and a line by Campos, a line of American-made leather handbags and accessories from Brooklyn, N.Y.

"With handbags, you never have to worry about getting the size right," Arthur said.

Her store is also selling a line of "nice, beautiful, striped shirts" made in Pennsylvania by Small Trades, she said.

The shop owner also recommended Carmina Christina cosmetics and gift certificates as other great Mother's Day items in Arthur & Daughters.

Rebecca Wattenschaidt, owner of the new Elizabeth & West Fashion House, agreed with Arthur on the top gift.

Her shop at 15 N. Beaver St. is selling the Going to Market Tote by Blair Ritchey and several handmade clutches made in Ohio.

Wattenschaidt also recommended gift certificates and spring styles.

"A lot of patterns and bright colors are in this season," she said.

Elizabeth & West is also selling locally made, upcycled baby moccasins and rompers, which would make great gifts for the mom-to-be, Wattenschaidt said.

"But it's Mother's Day, and the best gift is something that's really for mom," she said.
