Residents in the greater Red Lion area should keep their vehicles, garages and sheds locked, said police, who have reported a "substantial increase" in the number of burglaries, vehicle thefts and thefts from parked vehicles.

The thefts mainly happen during overnight hours, but some have occurred during the daylight, York Area Regional Police Sgt. Jeff Dunbar.

Items taken include vehicles, lawn mowers, motorcycles, power lawn equipment, power tools and hand tools, police said.

In addition to keeping vehicles, garages and sheds locked, police are encouraging residents to consider installing motion-sensing lights over points of entry, and urged them to call 911 immediately if they see suspicious activity.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at (717) 741-1259.
