The Democratic Society of York is hosting its 122nd Jefferson Jackson Dinner starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 8 at the Holiday Inn Holidome in West Manchester Township.
York County Vice President Commissioner Doug Hoke will be named the 2014 James S.A. Benzel Democrat of the Year Award from the Democratic Society.
Hoke is a 1968 graduate of West York High School who received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science from Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri in 1982.
Hoke worked for the state Department of Revenue and the State Public School Building Authority before being elected commissioner in 2008.
He started and co-owns a York County commercial lawn care business and has served on numerous boards.
Keynote speaker is Montgomery County President Commissioner Josh Shapiro. The 40-year-old Democrat has served in various capacities at different levels of government.
Shapiro represented the 153rd Legislative District in the state House for seven years and is a former Congressional staffer in Washington, DC. At age 25, he was the youngest chief of staff on Capitol Hill.
Tickets, which include dinner, cost $35 for regular and $60 for patrons.
