The Northern High School community is rallying behind a district family in memory of a student who died following a car accident in Dover Township earlier this month.
John Jackson, 16, was a junior at the high school and died April 8 after a March 30 crash when he lost control on icy roads. Jackson's mother, Karen Lee Jackson, was also in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Courtney Hart, John Jackson's guidance counselor at the high school, said the school has organized a few fundraisers to support the family. It's been a "collective effort for those who loved John," she said.
Students organized efforts to raise funds by paying $1 to wear a hat to school and convince teachers to donate for dress-down days, Hart said.
Proceeds from a fundraiser Wednesday also will go toward the family, Hart said. Ferrante's Pizza & Restaurant in Dillsburg has agreed to donate 10 percent of all orders from 3-9 p.m.
Hart said as with the other fundraisers, students have been involved in this one, handing out fliers and spreading the word.
"Dillsburg is a great community, and there's been a lot of outpouring of support," Hart said.
The restaurant is located at 305 N. Baltimore St. in Dillsburg. Takeout orders are included in the fundraiser, and no coupon or flier is required to participate.
