Downtown Inc. is planning to have a fun, green day in York City this weekend.

The nonprofit is organizing the sixth annual Go Green in the City event, to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on North Beaver Street, between West Market and West Philadelphia streets.

Free event: The free festival is sponsored by local White Rose Credit Union, said Douglas Knight, marketing director for Downtown Inc., which focuses on economic development, physical appearance, promotions, community leadership and marketing in York.

Go Green will feature vendors with eco-friendly products, including food, market, art and crafts items.

"This event also is a way for us to focus on the buy local, shop local idea," Knight said.

Local business and nonprofits also will share information about environmental stewardship.

The event includes musical performances, draws several thousand people and is a pre-celebration of Earth Day, which will be observed globally Tuesday, Knight said.

Family fun: Go Green also gives families something fun and educational to do at Easter time, he added.

"Families have (relatives) coming home for Easter, so this will be a great way to help them get ready for the holiday," Knight said.

"And the Easter Bunny is going to be there bouncing around."

Knight said he hopes the Go Green festival encourages attendees to learn about York City.

"We want folks to see and experience the merchants, the sites, take in the downtown community," he said. "We want to show how the community can be brought together in interesting ways."
