A burglar who fled a Stewartstown home after being confronted by a resident early Monday morning was arrested about a block away, lying in a field, police said.

Matthew Joseph Arnold, 28, of Trouts Lane in the borough, is free on $25,000 bail, charged with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and theft from a motor vehicle, according to Southern Regional Police.

According to police, a resident of the first block of Church Street was awakened just before 2:30 a.m. by the sound of footsteps made by someone walking up to the home's second floor.

The victim confronted the burglar, who ran out of the home, police said.

Officers searched the area and found Arnold in a field about a block away, according to police. They said Arnold matched the victim's description of the burglar.

He was in possession of the victim's prescription medication when he was arrested, police said. Arnold also is accused of rummaging through the victim's vehicle.

Police said other parked vehicles in the neighborhood had items stolen from them. Anyone with information on those crimes is asked to call police at (717) 235-3944.
