Giant Food Stores on Friday announced it had removed Dole Italian Blend Salad Mix from shelves after a recall by Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc.

Dole Fresh Vegetables issued the recall because of potential listeria contamination.

Listeria can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease that includes high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. The bacteria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, people with HIV and those receiving chemotherapy, according to a company news release.

The item at risk and included in the recall is the 10-ounce Dole Italian Blend Salad Mix, with UPC 7143000819 and a use-by date of March 12.

Giant has received no reports of illness related to the item recalled, but it is advising customers to discard unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to the grocery store for a full refund, according to a news release.
