Incumbents in four of nine York County state House and Senate seats up for election this year will win the May 20 primary without competition unless a write-in or third-party challenger joins the race.

But most incumbents are facing challengers who, barring Democrats and some candidates for vacant seats, are tea party activists running against incumbent Republicans.

Last October, local tea party group the York 912 Patriots was disappointed with a congressional agreement to reopen the federal government and raise the debt ceiling. They vowed to fight harder to run candidates against moderate Republicans.

Among the candidates who answered the call is Beth Roberts, the group spokeswoman who made the "fight harder" proclamation. She's running against Rep. Seth Grove, R-Dover Township.

Running unopposed are Sen. Mike Folmer, R-Lebanon/Dauphin/York, and Reps. Keith Gillespie, R-Hellam Township, Mike Regan, R-Carroll Township, and Kevin Schreiber, D-York City.

Final: Tuesday was the last day to circulate and file nomination petitions to appear on the ballot for the primary. Candidates for the House must collect 300 signatures from people in their districts in order to get on the ballot. Senate candidates needed 500 signatures.

The race for one of two York County senate seats up for election this year, Folmer's race, is uncontested. But even the incumbent said he suspects most people don't yet realize his district now includes part of York because of redistricting.

The other senate race, for the vacant 28th Senate, is a hotly contested showdown between three Republicans and a Democrat. Candidate Rep. Ron Miller, R-Jacobus, has placed all of his chips on his run for the 28th Senate and did not file a petition for his House seat.

Running for the GOP nod for his House seat are a tea party challenger and a woman who worked in Miller's district office.
