I-83 southbound is closed between exit 4 -- the Shrewsbury exit -- and the state line, according to a press release from the state's Department of Transportation.
PennDOT plans to have the highway repaired and re-opened by the end of the weekend.
PennDOT says it is redirecting all southbound traffic off the interstate at exit 4 and onto Route 851 West in Shrewsbury. The detour will take drivers left from that road onto South Main Street and then eventually to Md. Route 439, which brings drivers back to I-83 around Maryland Line, Md.
The road closure was caused by a deteriorating drainage pipe under the highway, the press release says. Crews arrived with the intention to only close one of the two lanes, but found an eight-foot-by-13-inch gap under the road when they arrived to work on the pipe, the release says. At that point, PennDOT decided to close both lanes, the release says.
