A Dillsburg-area woman remains free after being arrested in Cumberland County for allegedly driving drunk with her son in the car.

Kelly D. Nelson, 41, of 196 Martel Circle in Carroll Township, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, DUI and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.

She was released on her own recognizance after being arraigned on the charges, court records state.

An Upper Allen Township police officer pulled Nelson over about 8:20 p.m. Tuesday on the Gettysburg Pike near the intersection of Mill Road after spotting Nelson's car repeatedly weaving in and out of its lane of travel, according to charging documents.

The officer noted he could smell a strong odor of alcohol on Nelson's breath and that she admitted to having consumed alcohol prior to driving, documents state.

Nelson also had an open container of alcohol in the car, police allege.

She was arrested after failing a field sobriety test, documents state.

Nelson's 9-year-old son was in the back seat of the car at the time, according to police.

A family member picked up the boy after his mother was arrested, police said.

Nelson's phone number could not be obtained. It is unclear if she has retained an attorney.
