Fred Klaif has some advice for York County residents hoping to buy a generator during the widespread power outages.

"Good luck finding one," said the 60-year-old Hellam resident.

Klaif visited a few stores in Springettsbury Township on Wednesday and came up empty handed.

"They're all sold out," he said.

Harbor Freight at 2460 E. Market St. sold its last generator by 2 p.m. Wednesday, a store manager said.

And a Lowe's clerk directed Klaif to the store website to find the model he was looking for, he said.

"A lot of people are looking for a generator that's less than $500. Nobody wants to spend thousands," Klaif said.

Most retailers sell generators at several price points from about $320 to $5,000.

"We're working closely with our distribution centers to make sure we have generators on hand," said Kelly Connelly, spokeswoman for Lowe's.

Generators have been selling quickly or have sold out throughout the northeast, and the store has relied on its emergency command center to replenish it's stock quickly, she said.

"We know the winter storms there have been driving demand," Connelly said.

Nearly 62,000 York County residents were without power Wednesday afternoon after several hours of sleet and freezing rain caused widespread damage throughout the region.

A half-inch of ice coated trees and power lines, bringing them to the ground throughout the day.

Met-Ed said local customers could be without power for multiple days.

A couple of hours into the outage, 58-year-old Wes McGrory was disappointed to learn True Value in Loganville doesn't carry generators.

After a call to the Shrewsbury location, he learned the store sold out early Wednesday.

"We sell out pretty quickly when there's a loss of power," said store clerk Joe Rickard.

The Shrewsbury store was expecting another shipment, but Rickard wasn't sure when.

McGrory said he might wait for the shipment or try his options online.

Home Depot, Lowe's and True Value showed either a low supply or no availability on several generators about 1 p.m. Wednesday.

"If I order online, it won't help me much this week, but with the winter we're having I should get one anyway," he said.
