Governor Tom Corbett used a visit Tuesday to the Red Lion Area School District to unveil a competitive grant program available to high-performing schools in the state.
Corbett visited the Pleasant View and Locust Grove elementary schools in the district to award the schools banners for their academic achievement, especially on the school performance profiles compiled earlier this year. Both schools scored above a 90, which the state considers to be high-achieving schools.
Red Lion Superintendent Scott Deisley congratulated his students, saying they are the pride of the district.
"Doing your best every day in school will give you the foundation for success in your life outside of school," Deisley said in his remarks.
Deisley was not available for comment later in the day Tuesday, but shared a release with the above remarks.
The grant: Corbett's Expanding Excellence Program will allow for schools that scored above 90 to compete for additional state funding in exchange for analyzing and sharing best practices.
Program details, including how much funding is available for the grants, will be released next Tuesday in Corbett's budget address.
Schools that are eligible to apply will need to provide a narrative about how they will share their best practices with low-achieving schools in the state, said Tim Eller, spokesman for the state Department of Education.
Eller said those schools could apply to share those practices in their own district, in neighboring schools or across the state.
"Since the (school performance) profile measures multiple indicators in a school, it allows schools that have a high profile score to share what they have done to raise student achievement," Eller said.
According to data from the profiles, 10 school districts in York County could be eligible for the program. York Suburban has four schools with scores above 90. The Dallastown Area, South Western and Southern York districts have three eligible schools each, and the Central York and Red Lion Area districts have two schools with scores above 90. Eastern York, Spring Grove Area and West York Area districts each have one eligible school.
Corbett's budget address is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4.
