Police in southern York County are looking for a man they say assaulted a 76-year-old man at a Stewartstown gas station in November.

The elderly man, whose name was not released, suffered four fractured ribs when he was shoved to the ground and either kicked or punched during the Nov. 19 assault, said Sgt. Darryl Smuck of Southern Regional Police.

He was taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment and is recovering.

Now police are asking for the public's help to identify the man who allegedly carried out the assault that happened about 3 p.m. at the Sunoco station at 62 N. Main St.

The assault happened before Southern Regional Police began providing services to Stewartstown. The department started providing police services to the town at the start of January when the borough's police department was integrated into the regional department.

Smoking a cigarette: The elderly man, who is from Hopewell Township and retired from a Maryland fire service, saw a younger woman smoking a cigarette as she was pumping gas and told her to put out the cigarette because of safety concerns, Smuck said.

"She refused and started berating him," the sergeant said.

That's when the alleged attacked walked out of the gas station, saw the confrontation and interjected by pushing the elderly man to the ground and assaulting him, Smuck said.

After the assault, the suspect got in a four-door car and left.

Smuck said it doesn't appear the alleged attacker and the woman knew each other before the assault.

"There's no indication the woman knew him," he said.

Anyone with information of the identity of the suspect is asked to call Southern Regional Police at (717) 235-3944 or (717) 840-2971.
