A Newberry Township couple was sentenced in federal court Tuesday after pleading guilty to tax evasion and trying to bribe an IRS agent.

Ivan Garces, 45, and Mayra Garces, 47, both of 755 Old Trail Road, were indicted by a grand jury in 2011 after they paid the agent to reduce the tax liability on income from their business, IMG International Commerce Co., according the U.S. Department of Justice.

U.S. Middle District Judge John E. Jones III sentenced Ivan Garces to 18 months in prison, a $7,700 fine, and a year of probation. Mayra Garces was sentenced to one year and one day in prison, a $7,700 fine and a year of probation.

In an undercover sting in November 2011, the couple paid the IRS agent $50,000 in cash. A review of business records showed the couple intentionally failed to report more than $1 million in income for 2008, 2009, and 2010, according to the Department of Justice.

The couple pleaded guilty last May and has paid the IRS more than $843,000 in penalties, back taxes and interest; the $50,000 used for the bribe was given to the U.S. Treasury, according to the Department of Justice.
