York County businessman and tea party activist Scott Wagner has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Republican nomination in the special election to fill the state senate seat vacated by Mike Waugh, R-Shrewsbury Township.

The York County GOP will announce its nominee Jan. 23, a date Wagner feels is too soon and is "designed to benefit their hand-picked candidate," who is not him, according to a press release from Wagner's office.

Nothing in the release suggests he will cease his campaign for the GOP nomination in the primary election for the same seat, which will be held May 20.

Waugh is vacating the seat to become the head of the Pa. Farm Show. His term only had a year left, so the special election winner will have to run again in the primary and main elections this year to keep the seat past 2014.
