A Fairview Township man had an unusual surprise waiting for him when he returned home on Monday.

The homeowner found an alleged burglar in the house in the 800 block of Lexington Place, according to township police.

The burglar, identified by police as Robert W. Dierich, attempted to run from the house but the homeowner was able to subdue him until officers arrived, police said.

Now Dierich, 44, of the 2900 block of Gettysburg Road in Camp Hill, is charged with burglary, robbery, simple assault and theft. He remained in York County Prison on $20,000 bail on Wednesday, according to court records.

When the homeowner arrived home, he noticed a van in his driveway and when he went inside, he heard the sound of footsteps coming from the second floor, police said.

Dierich came down the stairs and into the kitchen where the homeowner confronted him, police said.

Dierich tried to cover his face. When the homeowner said he was calling the police, Dierich charged at him, shoving and tackling the homeowner, as he tried to get out of the house, police said.

That's when the homeowner was able to subdue Dierich, police said.

Officers found items belonging to the homeowner inside of Dierich's van, police said.
