Hughes went to the house in the 1000 block of Mount Rock Road about 5:15 a.m. armed with a rifle and tried to rob those inside, state police said in a news release.

During the robbery, Terry Fulton, 36, no address provided, fought with Hughes but was shot three times, police said.

Fulton was taken to York Hospital for treatment.

After the shooting, Hughes fled the house but was chased by homeowner Mickle Shaffer, no age provided. Shaffer was able to get the gun and fatally shot Hughes once in the lower back, police said.
