A Lancaster County-based grocery chain will open its first York County store in April.

Darrenkamp's, a family-owned business that got its start in 1932, has plans for a 38,000-square-foot store in the Newberry Commons shopping center at the former site of a Superfresh.

The local grocery chain prides itself on its customer service and selection of fresh meats and produce, said co-owner Joe Darrenkamp.

Darrenkamp's great-grandfather started the business out of a horse and buggy in Lancaster, Darrenkamp said.

The chain has steadily grown in recent years, opening its third location in Elizabethtown in 2007. A store in Mount Joy opened 10 years earlier.

The Newberry Township store will be Darrenkamp's first venture outside Lancaster County.

"The location is absolutely incredible," Darrenkamp said. "The store is literally a billboard for 83."

The former Superfresh is undergoing a renovation to ready Darrenkamp's for a spring opening. The building has been vacant for about three years.

"Everything's going to be totally replaced," Darrenkamp said.

Darrenkamp's is a member of the Family Owned Markets cooperative, a group of locally owned businesses that buy advertising together.

The grocery chain also saves money through its partnership with Associated Wholesalers Inc., another cooperative for buying food products.

Those partnerships allow Darrenkamp's to compete with major grocery chains, Darrenkamp said.

Darrenkamp said he expects to hire about 100 people for the York County store. He said the company will probably start looking for workers early next year.

"The buzz has been incredible," Darrenkamp said. "We're really excited about it."
