Police are warning people not to fall for a phone scam in which callers claim they are holding a family member hostage and demanding ransom money.

Southwestern Regional Police said a Spring Grove man received such a call Monday.

A Hispanic male caller claimed to have the Spring Grove man's father and wanted $2,000 for his safe release, police said.

Other area police departments have received complaints about similar scam calls, police said.

It appears the calls are coming from outside the United States but may appear as local numbers on Caller ID, police said.

As always, people should immediately report suspicious activity to their local police departments, police said.
