A Mechanicsburg man arrested early Sunday morning was driving his mother's car while under the influence of drugs -- and without a license -- with his 4-year-old son inside, police allege.
Kenneth M. Adams, 23, of 106 N. Arch St., is in York County Prison on $5,000 bail, charged with reckless endangerment, DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, illegal possession of lorazepam pills and driving with a suspended license.
Northern York County Regional Police said Adams drove to the Sheetz at 215 Arsenal Road in Manchester Township and started asking people inside for help, saying he had a flat tire because he'd hit a curb "near the mall."
Not acting 'normal': But an employee called 911 because Adams was "acting in a manner that appeared not to be normal," according to his arrest affidavit.
Officer Erika Eiker arrived at the store about 12:15 a.m. Sunday, found Adams inside a Mazda Protege and noted he appeared to be "nodding off" from narcotics, his affidavit states. The Mazda had a flat tire, and a spare tire and a jack were lying next to it, police said.
Adams initially said a friend had driven the car to Sheetz but later admitted he had driven the car there himself, despite having a suspended license, according to the affidavit.
Eiker administered several field-sobriety tests to Adams, then arrested him for suspected DUI, police said.
Crack pipe: While patting down Adams, she found a crack-cocaine pipe in his front pocket, which Adams initially claimed a friend had placed in his pocket, the affidavit states.
At that point Adams said he uses heroin daily and had drug paraphernalia in his backpack, police allege.
Eiker searched the pack and found paraphernalia including hypodermic needles, a spoon, a straw, a small amount of marijuana and 100 lorazepam pills, according to the affidavit.
Agency notified: Police called Adams' mother, who owns the Mazda. She responded and took custody of Adams' son, police said.
Officers also notified the York County Office of Children, Youth and Families, police said.
It was unclear Monday whether Adams has retained an attorney.
