Buying jewelry in York County could help a child go to school in Guatemala.
This can happen through Servants Inc.'s Ladies Day Out shopping event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at Chapel Church's parish building at 3050 Cape Horn Road in Red Lion.
Servants Inc. is a Hallam Borough nonprofit Christian organization that recruits volunteers for U.S. and foreign mission trips and for local home improvement projects that benefit senior citizens, people with disabilities and families in need.
For Ladies Day Out, more than a dozen vendors will be selling items, including jewelry, kitchenware and crafts, said Christina Springer, one of the event's organizers.
The vendors will donate a portion of their sales to Servants Inc.'s Serving At-Risk Families program that mainly assists children and families in need in Villa Nueva, Guatemala, she said.
The Ladies Day Out funds will be used to help families pay for their children's education, Springer said.
"The missionaries in Guatemala are trying to help families break the cycle of poverty by getting their kids into school," she said. "A lot of families can't afford to (enroll) their children into school."
Springer said she and her husband, Paul Springer, have participated in mission trips to Guatemala six times, including eight days in September when they helped paint a future computer room at a school.
Over the years, the couple also did volunteer work at an orphanage in Villa Nueva, Springer said.
Springer's husband is an information technology leader with the Servants' At-Risk Families program.
This is the first year for Servants Inc.'s Ladies Day Out program, Springer said.
"We hope it will be a success so we can do it every year," she said. "We're trying to extend the love of God to the people of Guatemala by helping them with their education."
