A 14-year-old girl who told Hanover Police that a man tried to lure her into his windowless van wasn't telling the truth, police said.
The girl initially reported she was in an alley off the 600 block of East Middle Street Wednesday evening when a man got out of a van, yelled to her and grabbed her. She told officers she ran away.
But in a subsequent interview, the girl admitted the man didn't grab her.
She now says she was walking in the alley with her headphones on when the man got out of his van and the two brushed elbows, police said.
"She admitted that her thoughts and statements to police on the night of the incident were based upon her fear of what she thought could happen," according to a news release from Hanover Police Chief Dwayne Smith.
Police said the man is no longer suspected of criminal misconduct.
