A 63-year-old West Manchester Township woman died Saturday after setting herself on fire outside of York Hospital Friday night, according to Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim.

Sarah Hannan died of severe burns at Lehigh Valley Hospital, where a burn unit was treating her, at 9:55 a.m. Saturday. Grim said the death was ruled a suicide based on an investigation from York City Police.

He said it wasn't clear how or why the woman set herself on fire. York City Police did not immediately return calls for comment.

York Hospital spokesman Barry Sparks said a female patient came into the emergency department around 7:15 p.m. Friday evening. She was treated, then discharged at 8:15 p.m., Sparks said.

Around 9:30, p.m. some medical students were walking from the south parking lot to the hospital and saw the woman, near the south entrance of the hospital, was on fire, Sparks said.

One of the students got a fire extinguisher and put out the fire. The woman was taken to the emergency department and treated for severe burns and stabilized before being transferred, Sparks said.

He said privacy laws prevented him from providing the woman's name or saying for what she was treated.
