West York resident Jon Scallion is among the top five finalists on "Hell's Kitchen," and this week he'll be the featured guest at a York City coffee company.
Scallion, 27, started out early this year as one of 20 contestants on "Hell's Kitchen," a competitive cooking show that airs at 8 p.m. Thursdays on Fox.
In the reality show, master chef Gordon Ramsay critiques contestants' skills with a sharp tongue.
There are five episodes left, and the season finale will air at the end of July, said Fox spokeswoman Alyssa Sales.
The winner of the show will earn a head chef position at one of Ramsay's restaurants, working under executive chef Jeremy Berlin at Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill at Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas.While Scallion is vying for the prize, he will attend an event downtown this week.
On Thursday, he'll be at New Grounds Roasting Co., 284 W. Market St., where he will cook and be part of a "Hell's Kitchen" viewing party.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Thursday, and the event is expected to end at 10 p.m.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. They can be purchased by calling New Grounds at 843-0716 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
"I chose New Grounds
because it represents what we're are trying to accomplish in York," Scallion said in a statement. "They are a small business that roasts all their own beans and supports local arts. There are a lot of these treasures in York, and I'd love to expose people to them and help support the community."
The local chef reached out to New Grounds for the event, said Colin Cameron, wholesale director for the company.
Cooking, too: Scallion will bring some prepared items to the event and will be cooking on site as well, Cameron said.
Garrahan's Ghost, an Irish punk-rock band, will take the stage before the viewing party.
After the viewing, Scallion will stick around for a Q-and-A session with the audience.
During a previous interview with The York Dispatch, he described his experience on the show as "intense."
"You think you have an idea of what you're getting into, but it's way more than what you'd expect. We're rocking and rolling all day long," Scallion said.
Working with Ramsey can make a young chef nervous, but he's learned a lot, he said.
"No matter what he says -- even if he screams at you and makes you feel 2 inches tall -- it will make you a better chef," Scallion said.
