The purpose of Dallastown Area Educational Foundation's million-dollar campaign for a new turf field is to help avoid using taxpayer dollars.
A group of eight high school students, using some slick editing and camera skills, helped chip in $10,000 toward that lofty goal.
Dallastown Area High School's video club, led by adviser Joe Klinedinst, won Ford's national "Drive One 4UR School" contest this fall for having the best video showcasing their local fundraising efforts.
The $10,000 will go straight to the campaign. It's the second time the students won, after taking first last fall and fifth in the spring. For the video, according to Ford, students had to "capture the spirit" of a local fundraising event and incorporate Ford, which has been donating money to schools nationwide when people test drive a vehicle.
Students contributing directly to their school's cause is a perfect scenario, said school board and foundation member Lauren Rock.
"They own it. They are making it happen," Rock said.
Rock, who was featured in the video, was also thrilled about students getting practical experience.
"What makes learning the best is when you have real-life connections," Rock said.
Winning a nationwide contest is hard to fathom, said senior Frank Saylor, who served as a videographer.
"It looks good for our program," added senior Cameron Baer.
The video is two minutes long - $5,000 a minute! - but took a month to put together, primarily because of editing. It features voice-overs of students and campaign officials talking about the importance of replacing the Wildcats' aging natural field with a turf field, plus several shots of Ford vehicles on loan from Apple Ford.
"We tried to incorporate that as many times as possible," Cameron said of Ford mentions.
Other students who worked on the project included Michael Slankard, Sarah Elliehausen, Dominic Defelice, David Linthicum, Cullen Wenzler and Jacob Bradfield.
"It's a really good resume builder," Sarah said.
