The Cultural Alliance of York County has a night of fun and fireworks planned for its 34th annual Fourth of July celebration.
The event begins at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, at the York Expo Center at 334 Carlisle Ave. in West Manchester Township.
"It's free and open to the public," said Mary Ann Winkleman, the alliance's campaign director. "It's a great community event for families. Even outside the center grounds, folks pull up chairs in their yards and they all enjoy the fireworks."
More than 20,000 people attend the event annually, she said.
The event features musical presentations by the York Symphony Orchestra and York Youth and York Junior symphonies and by local bluegrass-country band "Waitin on a Train" and soloist soprano Laura Heydt-Adams.
Many of the music selections will be patriotic music, Winkleman said. Heydt-Adams also will lead a sing-along session with the audience.
The public can get a printout of the sing-along songs from the cultural alliance's web site at www.culturalalliance-york.org.
The fireworks show will begin about 9:20 p.m. by Shaeffer Pyrotechnics, Winkleman said. The show is expected to last at least 30 minutes, she said.
"The fireworks, it's wonderful, so well received,' Winkleman said. "Cheers go up. It's just an exciting time."
After the fireworks, local bluegrass band HogMaw will perform a concert until 11 p.m.
"As folks are walking out, (HogMaw) will play," Winkleman said. "It's a good way to wait for the traffic to move along. A lot of people like to rush out at once after the fireworks. You can avoid that. Stay for the concert and have an extra hour of fun."
