Plans for a 99-room hotel in York Township will be the subject of a public meeting Tuesday.
Springwood Real Estate Services is seeking permission from township zoning officials to build a Hampton Inn and Suites on a 5-acre parcel near the I-83 exit to South Queen Street.
The York-based company needs special approval - called a variance - to exceed the maximum hotel length allowed by the township's zoning ordinance.
David Hogg, Springwood's president and CEO, said he'd be "surprised" if the township denied the variance request. The ordinance limits hotel lengths to 150 feet, which Hogg said is an unusually strict and impractical requirement. Springwood is proposing to build a 275-foot hotel.
No hotels built in York County during the past 25 years have been smaller than 150 feet, Hogg said.
The company is also considering nearby parcels as potential sites for a restaurant, bank and senior housing, Hogg said.
"It'll be a major change, upgrade for the whole neighborhood," he said.
Springwood has built multiple senior-housing projects in York County, including Westminster Place at Stewartstown, Springwood Overlook in York Township, Stonybrook Gardens in Springettsbury Township, and Shrewsbury Courtyard and Shrewsbury Courtyard II in Shrewsbury.
The South Queen Street property - located about a quarter-mile south of the Queensgate Shopping Center - is the former site of Wright Brothers Lincoln Mercury. The dealership's building will be demolished to make room for the hotel, Hogg said.
The hotel - which will feature an indoor pool - could create 25 new jobs, Hogg said. Construction could begin by spring of 2013, he said.
The zoning board will consider the company's application at 6 p.m. Tuesday[eri: June 26: ] at the township office, 190 Oak Road.
