Crews have repaired a water main break on heavily traveled Edgewood Road in Springettsbury Township, with both lanes open to motorists Tuesday.

But traffic could be restricted at some point Tuesday or Wednesday, weather permitting, as a final coat of blacktop is applied, said York Water Co. president and CEO Jeffrey Hines.

Hines said the company received an alarm about 2:30 Monday morning because a water tank on top of the hill was losing inventory.

By 3:30 a.m., crews were at the scene of the gusher, near the intersection of Harrowgate Road, he said.

Traffic was snarled through rush hour, with two-lane travel being restored around 8:30 p.m. Monday, he said.

The break occurred because of a joint failure, the cause of which is undetermined, Hines said. The pipes generally last as long as 120 years.

Seven customers had lost water service, but it was restored before noon Monday. Hines said he's not sure how much water was lost.
