Safety is always important, and learning about it can be fun - as families who attend this Saturday's free Safety Family Festival will find out.

The York City Health Bureau is hosting the festival from noon until 3 p.m. Saturday at 435 W. Philadelphia St.

"The purpose is most definitely to give information to York city youth on how to stay safe during their summer break, but it's also about highlighting the services we offer," said Nancy Melendez of the York City Health Bureau.

Activities at the festival include a smoke van and fire engine, 911 education, poison control information, vision screening and lead poisoning screening.

Other topics will include aquatic safety information from the Red Cross, bicycle safety, child identification cards and fingerprinting.

Nurses will be on hand to answer questions, and expectant mothers are also encouraged to attend, said Melendez.

"We want to make contact with all the pregnant women in York city and be able to provide them with all of the services we provide them with for free at the York City Health Bureau," Melendez said.
