Except for the two young guys behind the counter and some mint raspberry tea on the menu, Marchio's Deli will look Saturday just as longtime customers should remember.

New owners Dan Neff and Mark Jones are taking a don't-fix-what's-not-broken approach to Marchio's, a popular market stand that has served deli meats, salads, cheese and sandwiches since the 1950s.

After a brief hiatus, the stand will return to Central Market on Saturday.

“We're going to get slammed,” Neff predicted.

Neff and Jones, both 2009 graduates of Central York High School, recently finished studying at Yorktowne Business Institute's School of Culinary Arts. They are both 21 years old.

Tradition: Neff said he and Jones hope to carry on the legacy of Marchio's as a place to mingle and catch up with old friends.

“It's a nice, friendly place,” he said.

Neff said he grew up visiting Central Market with his parents on Saturdays. That family tradition sparked a relationship with the deli's owners, he said.

So when Diane Seitz and Connie Markle decided it was time to say goodbye to Marchio's Deli in December after 14 years of ownership, the timing was right for a new generation to take over.

Marchio's is one of a handful of “legacy vendors” at Central Market, said Casi Babinchak, chief operations officer.

“It's great news to have it back,” she said.

All of the market's vendors — even nearby Conrad's Deli — stand to benefit from Marchio's return, she said, because a fuller market draws more customers to the historic building.

For now, the deli will be open during regular market hours from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
